![]() While some people illegally use the “emergency vehicle only” U-turn options, it’s a risk. While you can easily get back on the I-80 heading east… the next closest exit you can use to turn around is half-an-hour away! So it’ll literally take an hour to get from the speedway back to the rest stop… even though “as the crow flies” it’s only four miles. If you decide to then go to the speedway site, be prepared for a long drive back around to the rest stop. If you’re driving from SLC, you’ll hit the rest stop first. The I-80 doesn’t have exits in the area which allow you to easily go between the two sites. Wendover is the closest city.This is important to keep in mind: if you’re aiming for sunset photos, you need to pick one of the spots ahead of time and commit. It is located along I-80 near the Utah-Nevada border. Stretching over 30,000 acres, the Bonneville Salt Flats is a fragile resource administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The Bonneville Salt Flats is one of the most unique natural features in Utah. This is not an alien world far from earth it is Utah's famous Bonneville Salt Flats. Imagine the passing thunder of strange vehicles hurtling by on a vast dazzling white plain. But apparently they are a pretty big deal. ![]() To be honest, I am not sure I'd ever even heard of them before we stopped at a rest stop highlighting the this unique area west of Salt Lake City. Rolling down Interstate 80, we got to see the Bonneville Salt Flats for the first time. The drive from Elko, Nevada to our next destination Salt Lake City, Utah was interesting, with some very unique geological features. ![]()
